Onita Marie Thurman, age 80, Harrodsburg, wife of James Ray Thurman, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024 at Ephraim-McDowell Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg. Born November 2, 1944 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Lyons and Betty Mae Walker. Onita was a graduate of West Side High School in Harrodsburg and received an associate degree from Sullivan College in Louisville. She was a factory worker for over 21 years at Trim Masters in Harrodsburg then became a customer service worker for the Liquor Barn in Danville and she loved cooking traveling, attending church services, being with her family and loved to watch the UK basketball team play.
Survivors other than her husband include: a son James Farnada Lyons of Cincinnati; four daughters Leigh Anne (Eric) Hayes of Lexington, Jacquelyn Ross Thurman of Cincinnati, Candace Yvette (Stephon) Watkins of Lexington and Marceline (Kenton) Bottoms of Lawrenceburg; three sisters Carolyn Vandivier of Cincinnati, Sederia (Jerry) Ford and Cecelia (Wasin) Muhammad both of Harrodsburg; one brother Leon (Kathryn) Van Dyke, Jr. of Harrodsburg. Onita was preceded in death by a son Kenneth Carver Lyons and a sister Jessica Anne Lyons.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 4, 2025 at St. Peter A.M.E. Church by Rev. Reginald Pullums, Bro. Randall Bartleson, Bro. Donald Wayne Smith, Pastor Jimmy Jones and Dr. Phillip A. Yates. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Harrodsburg.
Pallbearers are Wayne Andrews, Larry Andrews, Tilton Bradshaw, Kenton Bottoms Jr., Clay Goins, Lamont Linton, Travis VanDyke and Stevie Yeast. Honorary bearers are T.J. Burnside, Thomas “Booski” Porter and the Harris brothers Andy, Robert, and John.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 11:00 am until the time of services at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Sims Funeral Services of Harrodsburg.
