James Edward Fitzgerald, 88 of Harrodsburg passed away with family Tuesday night, June 2, 2020 at his home. Born June 3, 1931 in Burnside, KY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Edna Coomer Fitzgerald. He graduated from Burnside High School in 1949 where he played basketball and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 15. After high school, he joined the United States Merchant Marine Service in 1950. On his return home he worked construction jobs through various unions as a heavy equipment operator. He joined the Kentucky State Police in 1959, retiring in 1984 with the rank of Lieutenant. Upon retirement, the next day he went to work as Personnel and Security Supervisor at KayBee Toys warehouse in Danville where he retired at the age of 65. He enjoyed travelling and was an avid golfer who enjoyed the companionship of his fellow golfers. James was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Burnside and a current member at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son Jim (Ellen Marie) Fitzgerald of Knoxville, TN and a sister Joann (William Kay) Canada of Cincinnati, OH. He is also survived by three nieces and 1 nephew. He was preceded in death by his first wife Jean Greene Fitzgerald, his second wife Margaret Witherspoon Fitzgerald and one nephew.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, June 5, 2020 at Sims Funeral Services. Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 6, 2020 in the Spring Hill Cemetery Pavilion located at 529 North Greenville Street in Harrodsburg with Larry Camic presiding. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Nick Patterson, Randy Baker, Mike Richardson, Todd Burns, Terry Oswald and Michael Oswald. Honorary bearers are Ralph Lipps, Bruce Patterson, Harold Davis, Allen Knight and Ed Hudson.
