Howard Hinden Howells, 96, widower of Ann Hardin Chinn Howells, died peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2025, at their family home, Cardwellton. They were happily married for 68 years, until her death in 2017.
Born August 20, 1928, in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Howard Malcolm and Caroline Hinden Howells.
Mr. Howells retired in 1985 after 16 years with RV Cablevision as a Cable Television Engineer. He also worked for the State of Kentucky Highway Department for 14 years as a communications technician.
A Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS General G. 0. Squier; the USS Midway, and the USS Cadmus, he was a dedicated volunteer and Life Member of Bataan Memorial Post 6935 in Harrodsburg. He served from 1982-83 as All American Department Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as Secretary of the Governor's Advisory Board on Veterans' Affairs and on the Department of Kentucky Legislative Committee for many years. Through his efforts and others, the vision of a veterans' center in central Kentucky was realized with the completion of the Thomson-Hood Veterans' Center in 1991 where he served as Chairman of their Veterans' Advisory Board. He also served as Chairman of the Central Kentucky Veterans' Committee responsible for organizing programs at Camp Nelson for over 15 years.
Mr. Howells was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church of Harrodsburg since 1949, serving as an Elder, Deacon, and singing in the choir with his wife and son.
He also served on the City of Harrodsburg Ethics Board and the Senior Citizens' Advisory Board.
Survivors include: a son, Howard (Kathy) Howells, II of Harrodsburg; and two daughters, Ann Howells, of Harrodsburg; and Ruth (Sherrill) Smith of Frankfort; six grandchildren, Grant Smith of Frankfort; Morgan (Jacob) Wolf of Louisville; Sophia Smith of Lewisville, TX; Kay Howells of Bowling Green; Thomas Howells of Harrodsburg; and Parker (Ashley) Smith of Louisville; seven great grandchildren, and two nieces and a nephew, and a number of great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, David Howells and a niece of Allentown, PA.
Above everything else, Mr. Howells was a devoted family man who will be lovingly remembered as Pappy.
A service for Mr. Howells will be held Saturday, March 15, at 2 p.m. following visitation from 12 to 2 at the United Presbyterian Church, 326 South Main, Harrodsburg. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, following the service.
Pallbearers are grandchildren and great grandchildren: Grant Smith, Jacob Wolf, Tom Howells, Parker Smith, Kingston Wilkinson, and Hunter Wolf. Sims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
