E G Plummer Obituary

The following information is being provided by Sims Funeral Services with permission from the family and Preston Pruitt Spurlin Funeral Home who is entrusted with his arrangements. 

EG Plummer, 89, of Danville, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. EG was born on February 20, 1937, in Danville, KY, to the late James and Allie Burden Plummer. He was raised by his late grandparents, Jeff and Dora Burden. EG was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley Plummer.

EG Plummer graduated from Danville High School in 1956. While at DHS, he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He was a Track State Champion: 4 times mile run. Set state record twice, in 1955 and 1956. He won 880 yard run 3 times. Selected KY Trackman of the Year, 1954, 1955, 1956. He was a member of the 1954 undefeated state championship football team.  A 1954 honorable mention all-state football. In 1960 he graduated from the University of Kentucky. Southeastern Conference Track Championships: 1959, won the SEC 880 yard run. He tied the record at 1:52.8. He was a member of the 1958 undefeated cross country team. That team went on to win the SEC championship. Individual runner-up twice in the X-C Championships. During his 29 year coaching career at Danville, he guided eleven teams to state championship titles: 5 girls cross country, 1982-1987, 3 boys outdoor track, 1988-1990, 2 boys indoor, 1988-1989, and 1 girls track, 1988. Two runner-ups,Track 1978, X-C 1987.  He Coached 37 individual track, relay, or X-C state champions. In 1989 he was inducted into the KTCCCA Hall of Fame as a coach. In 2018, he was inducted into the KTCCCA Athletes Hall of Fame. Nominated by KHSCA for National Coach of the year: 1989 boys track, 1996 boys cross country, and 1996 girls cross country. 1996 selected section two (KY, OH, PA, WV, MD, VA, DC) National Sectional Coach of the Year. In 1998 he received Danville's Bill Vaught Memorial Coach of the Year Award. 1998 DHS New Rubber Track facilities named in his honor. Three DHS annual meets named for him: Coach Plummer 5K Run, Plummer High School Cross Country Invitational, Plummer Track and Field Invitational. In 2006 he was inducted into Danville's Charter Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a long time state official for cross country, track, and field.

EG was a beloved teacher, coach, assistant principal, and assistant transportation director at Danville High School. He coached track, field, cross country, and football at Danville High School and Harrodsburg High School for many years. He enjoyed fishing and cheering on his beloved Danville Admirals and University of Kentucky Athletics.

Surviving is a daughter, Mandy Plummer of Danville; a son, Roger Plummer of Danville; a Goddaughter, Sadie Gambrel of Danville; several cousins; and special companions, Gary & Heidi Huffman Yates and Fred & Beverly Durham.
 

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at First Christian Church in Danville with Rev. Dr. Marcus Stallworth and Rev. Dr. Marcia Mount-Shoop officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at Bellevue Cemetery.

A Celebration of his life will be held on August 1, 2026, at Danville High School lobby from 3:00 - 6:00 pm.

Pallbearers are Jeff Trueblood, Danny Gadberry, Chuck Stallard, Ronnie Stamps, Kenny Grubbs, David Davis and Robert Southerlan.

Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Galloway, Baker Williams, "The Girls at the Bowling Alley" and all former athletes that he coached.
