Ann Hardin Chinn Howells died peacefully at her family home, Cardwellton, Sunday, May 28th.  A native of Harrodsburg, she was born June 15, 1926 to the late Colonel George M. and Haldon G. Chinn.  She was preceded in death by an infant brother.  Ann Hardin was a descendant of many notable Mercer Countians.

Ann Hardin graduated from Cardome Academy of Georgetown, KY and was the last surviving member of her class of 1944.  She then went to Washington, D.C. and attended Cochran School of Art and while living there met Howard Hinden Howells of Allentown, PA.  They were married February 16, 1949 at Anacostia Naval Air Station in D.C.  They eventually moved to Harrodsburg where they lived for the majority of their 68 years and raised their family.

Ann Hardin is survived by her husband, Howard, and their three children:  Howard H. Howells II (Kathy), Ann C. Howells of Harrodsburg and Ruth H. Smith (Sherrill) of Frankfort.  She is also survived by six grandchildren:  Grant Smith, Morgan Wolf, Sophia Smith, Parker Smith, Kay Dunn and Thomas Howells and five great grandchildren.  She is also survived by a brother-in-law and his family in PA.

Ann Hardin was an 81- year member of the United Presbyterian Church and was active, until her health declined, in choir and serving as elder.  She was a member of the Harrodsburg and Kentucky Historical Societies and Daughters of the American Revolution.  As a young mother, she enjoyed being a scout leader, Sunday School teacher, band parent, PTA and 4-H leader.  She had a love for art and was an avid watercolor painter.  She had a passion for service to Veteran’s Affairs.  She was a longtime volunteer to Thomson Hood Veteran’s Center.  She served multiple terms as president of the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Harrodsburg chapter of the VFW.  Her love of Mercer County and its history was evident through her years of volunteer service to the Harrodsburg Historical Society at Morgan Row.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church by minister Rollin Tarter.  Burial will follow in the Springhill Cemetery in Harrodsburg, KY.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at the church.

Pallbearers are:  Grant Smith, Parker Smith, Tom Howells, Frank Lukitsch, Jalen Lukitsch and Jacob Wolf.  Honorary Bearers are the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Gideons International, POB 176, Harrodsburg, KY 40330; Harrodsburg Historical Society, 220 South Chiles Street, Harrodsburg, KY  40330 or Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church, 326 South Main Street, Harrodsburg, KY  40330.
