Bessie Henderson, age 87, Harrodsburg, widow of Charles Henderson, died Monday, May 15, 2017 at her home. Born November 27, 1929 in Harrodsburg, she was daughter of the late Edward and Mary Lou (Bradshaw) Hines. She was a member of the St. Peter AME Church in Harrodsburg where she was formerly the Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, a member of the finance committee, head of the kitchen committee, a member of the choir, was the Pastor’s Steward, Director of Christian Education and the Women’s Missionary Society. She was also a member of the B & PW Club, Roots and Heritage Committee and a member of the West Side School Committee.

Survivors include one son: Michael E. VanDyke, Harrodsburg; a daughter-in-law, Harrilyn VanDyke, Harrodsburg; one grandson, Phillip L. VanDyke II, Harrodsburg; one great grandchild, Jaila Dunn, Harrodsburg; one nephew, Craig Hines, Campbellsville; one niece, Robin Hines, Louisville; a cousin Rosie Davidson, Lexington and several cousins. Other than her husband she was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Lamont VanDyke I, two brothers, Henry Hines and Elmer Payne Reid and one niece, Frances Mendez.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 pm, Friday, May 19, 2017 at the St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal by Pastor William Jenkins and Rev. Ralph Smith. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

Pallbearers are: Cecil Smith, Steve Smith, Leon VanDyke, Tilton Bradshaw, John T. Mayes and Elwood Byrd. Honorary bearers are: Robert Harris, Andy Harris, John Harris, Kenneth Jones, Kenneth Green, Robert Jewell Wade and Brad Guthrie.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 6 until 9 pm and Friday, May 19, 2017 from 11 am until the time of services at the St. Peter AME Church.
